Blephex is a new treatment for Blepharitis now offered at Nuvo!

Blephex

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and the base of your eyelashes. Anyone can get blepharitis at any age. The overgrowth of bacteria causes crusting along the eyelid and creates a sticky environment that traps dead skin cells and other debris among eyelashes. Eyelids are difficult to clean, and this overgrowth of bacteria scurf and debris can accumulate over many years.

How do we deal with it?

Well, there are traditional methods such as scrubbing the eyelids with baby shampoo or cleaning with various lid care products, hot compresses, etc. But these semi-effective home treatments can become daunting and do not offer the kind of relief your eyes deserve. Fortunately, there is a new treatment for blepharitis, BlephEx™! This in-office procedure performed directly by your Nuvo technician will thoroughly eliminate the scurf and bacterial debris that builds up along the lid margin.

How is Blephex different?

The BlephEx™ treatment removes excess bacteria, biofilm and bacterial toxins, the main causes of inflammatory dry eye and lid disease. With regular treatments, patients can finally enjoy a life free from the chronic and irritating symptoms associated with dry eye and blepharitis. It is a painless in-office procedure performed by a Nuvo technician. A new patented handpiece is used to spin a medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids. This new treatment is sure to help you feel better!

Genetic Testing

Macula Risk®

Because you have great genes, you should be able to give yourself every advantage in the future. With that in mind, we now offer genetic risk profiling for assessment of the risk of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a DNA test known as Macula Risk®.

If AMD has affected other family members, it may be important to know your risk of development. With this information, we can work together to slow the symptoms and select appropriate eye supplements for your individual genetic risk profile.

A little more about Macula Risk®

It is estimated that up to 70% of AMD risk is attributable to genetic variation. Macula Risk analyzes 15 AMD-associated genetic variants in 12 different genes. These genes are present across four biological pathways known to be involved in AMD pathogenesis: the complement system (CFH, C3, CFI, C2 and CFB), cholesterol metabolism (CETP, LIPC, ABCA1 and APOE), extracellular matrix remodelling (TIMP3 and COL8A1) and oxidative stress (ARMS2). All of the genetic markers in Macula Risk PGx have been validated in at least four independent publications involving tens of thousands of study subjects. WHOA, that’s A LOT of science.

What now?

Basically, we want to offer you every advantage for the continued health of your eyes. So feel free to ask your eye doctor for more details!
